I was still in grade school when I first heard of the brand Baby-G. I don't really know what their products looked like - but it was so popular at school that word of mouth is you are cool if you own one, that it is a very tough (durable) watch for girls from the popular G-Shock maker - and very expensive!
Growing up, I realized my fondness for watches. I mean as a girl I've been into chandelier and stud gem earrings and bracelets like bangles and the swarovski jewels and other accessories stuff - but watches are really my kind of thing. I remember that when I was a child I saw a yellow Hello Kitty watch at a department store. Twas love at first sight - I can't stop thinking about that watch so I saved up for it and bought it. The watch has a white dial with a very cute Hello Kitty in the middle and some flowers. I knew back then that it wasn't original because it didn't come from a Gift gate or Sanrio store. But to me it looks authentic- the quality and color of the Hello Kitty drawing on the face of the watch is flawless.
So as soon as I started earning I purchased a lot of watches to go with my office wardrobe -- cheap ones priced at P100 -P150 ($2-$3). I can even remember buying a fake black Rado watch for P150, a fake Gucci bangle watch with colored interchangeable rings for P500, and another fake white Charriol bangle watch - but I was very happy about all these because they are fashionable and cheap!
Anyway going back- so my watches would go out of battery, rust or cause some allergy on my wrist. I would forget about them -give or throw them away and buy new ones because I can afford it.
They are like "disposable watches."
Then I guess my tastes went it into some kind of upgrade -and this started after seeing Valentino watches one day at a store. They were in this tall glass cabinet - their designs are copied from popular brands - Giordano, Fossil, Guess, Mango, DKNY and many more.
I bought a white strapped one (Giordano version) with a rectangular dial with faux white diamonds on the edges. I didn't stop from there and bought 6 more watches from Valentino in a couple of months. Their watches are great, they are durable enough and they look expensive! Those watches are still in my drawer and they are still working! I just have to replace their straps and batteries if I want to use them again though. Their watches price range from P500-P1200 now and their designs and collections have expanded.
I forgot Valentino and soon bought this very tiny watch by Val Constantine - the dial is small like a button and I love it very much also because of its band - it has gems on it! Yellow and white gems! It was my first expensive watch at P1,500.00 (for me this range is expensive given the fact I only buy P100 peso watches before) - then in 3 months I bought a Mango watch on sale at watch shop in SM North. I got it for P2,500 when it was originally priced at P4,000. Then after about a year a Casio watch on sale too at P1,200 from its original price of P2995. I marvel at the fact that the straps of these watches are stainless steel. It means no more itching on my wrist.
So it goes that I now have a drawer full of my new watches including the Valentino ones. I love the versatility of these watches and how they compliment my outfit. On Fridays at work we are allowed to dress down - t shirts and jeans. One of my colleagues started selling Class A watches (or in short - fake) for a P100 each. I noticed my other co-worker wearing her white whale Baby- G. I clamored I want one too! So I got a pink one the next day and boy was I so happy! It looked so sporty and girly and cute on my wrist. After buying that watch I remembered wearing t-shirts more often so I could wear my pink Baby- G.
However, I noticed that in a few months, the buttons and lock of my cute watch started to rust. I had eventually stopped wearing it. So I checked eBay for an original Baby-G version of the one I have - I was shocked it was priced at P3,600+!
After about a year, I'm already aware of Baby-G's newer designs and was kinda hopeful to at least buy one (original) for myself. From googling Baby G- I fell in love with these two:
I only look at them online but never bought either one because they are painfully expensive for me. The price of these watches back in 2013 ranges about P4000 and above. I settled instead for a hot pink Casio Pop tone watch. I got this brand new for P1,500 from an online seller. I don't have it anymore but here it is:
(This is not my photo - credits to the owner)
Meanwhile, I was not aware that there are fake versions of the Baby-G Neon Illuminator series because the watch has no 3rd hand (seconds) and has a small digital portion aside from its 3 dimensional analog design - I thought that this feature of the Baby-G is hard to copy. Anyway, you wouldn't see this fake Baby-Gs in any bazaar before unlike those fake G-Shock watches - they are everywhere!
So another coworker sold these imitation Baby G watches and I am just super amazed that of course I bought one!
For P350 for a (they call it Class A) Baby G - the price isn't that bad. If you look at the watch from afar - worn by another person you wouldn't recognize right away that it is fake. I don't have that watch anymore because I gave it away - after buying an original one. But here's what it looked like - mine was pure black and the roman numerals are light blue. (This is not my photo - credits to the owner)
The watch worked fine - I mean its functions- from the hourly alarm, the digital round window and the watch hands showing accurate time - I'm not sure about the alarms though because I didn't try to use it.
Then I finally spotted an imitation of my favorite BGA 130 1BJF from a watch shop at the mall. I haggled and got it for P250. I also gave that one away but here's exactly what it looked like: (This is not my photo - credits to the owner)
I've worn that watch for months or probably a year. It became my favorite that I stopped wearing the other one! It looked a lot like the original because of its color: hot pink and black - up close its not that bad - my friends thought it was the real thing. Looking closely you can tell right away its not real because the background color on the digital part of the fake one is colorless - while the original is black. The Casio logo of the fake one is larger - and the watch light is orange.
So in 2014 my husband asked me what I want for my birthday and of course I have nothing in mind but an original Baby-G. I checked eBay Philippines for reputable sellers and decided I wanted a Baby-G watch that doesn't have an imitation/Class A version yet. Without thinking too much I settled for this one: (This is not my photo - credits to the owner)
This is my wrist wearing it :-)
This Baby-G is from their smoky color series, newly released that time I bought it.
Baby-G BGA-131-8B - price ranged at P4999 to P5200 that time and I think P6995 at Time Depot. I got it for P4,500.00 - absolutely brand new - complete with box, manuals and tin can.
This is a very lovely feminine watch. Its material is not shiny - its a matte stone grey color and the face is a very light pink shade including the round digital portion. The numbers are 3d but colored whitish pink.
In the dark, it looks lovely when you press the button for illumination:
After 3 months I decided to buy another one, a black color that I can use on a daily basis since I mostly wear black t-shirts at work. I bought this using my own money for getting paid during the holidays.
I got it for P4,100 from a power-seller on eBay - Ivanandsophia - they sell original and brand new G-shock and Baby-G watches - free cash on delivery. I am very pleased with their service by the way!
The black allover color of the watch is complimented with a silver/ mirror-like dial which made it an all around, simple yet appealing watch - but I am careful to always wear silver earrings to match it.
After having two, I am still restless so after 3 months - by October 2014, I bought my 3rd Baby-G.
I never really liked this one that much but the fact that it was brand new and cheap for P3000 which is a great bargain- I couldn't resist. I got it from the same seller where I bought my first Baby G from.
This Baby-G's gold dial against the black digital face is captivating. I love the combination! It is very sporty and eye-catching because of its color - royal blue and although transparent, its color still stood out.
I stopped my (Baby-G) watch buying frenzy after my 3rd purchase. Then I fell in love with this:
(This is not my photo - credits to the owner)
But I settled for this one - I bought this as as second hand item from eBay at P1600. Not bad since the store price for a brand new one is P2500 -P3200 - and this is hard to find. (This is my photo - taken from my Instagram account)
The pink digital dots on the background of the dial serves as seconds. They pop in and out all 10 of them. Looking at these dots make me smile. The digital indicator inside the heart can be changed to day, date, time or seconds - just like the Anadigi watches of Baby-G.
I also swapped! Swap watches by Tomato time.
I think I got this for P800 - 900. It has a free extra strap and I chose the black one.
Later then I bought only a face to go with the black strap I had - the silver glitter face - it was perfect!
There was this particular model of the Baby-G that I wanted so badly to have. Its kinda rare now and hard to find. However, I also kept contemplating and was trying to convince myself as well that its an old fashioned type of design - that I could do better with another, until one day when we were in my baby's clinic for a check-up, and it happened that I was looking out when a car pulled up in front and a woman got out, she has an appointment with her baby too; and so in full view from the time she stepped out of her car and slammed her door - her Baby-G caught my eye. My heart stopped. Until then I realized this watch is gorgeous and eye catching in person because of its gold color - gold lock and buttons. I was green with envy and I finally have to admit that I am totally in love with the BG 6901-1 and that I should have one too!
(This is not my photo - credits to the owner)
I kept mentioning it to my husband, that I wanted this particular watch - he dismissed it saying I should choose another model because its hideous and downright tacky. By February 2015 - there was a new posting for only 1pc of a brand new BG 6901-1 on eBay.ph!
I prayed so hard that no one else would buy it. Though my husband didn't like its color and style - he finally gave in and gave me money for it! I got it for P3900.00
Here's a shot I took after the parcel was delivered:
I consider this a classic designed beauty. Way back, I never thought of buying this type of color - black and gold. But seeing this beauty in person, shiny and simple but eye catching and elegant, I wanted it and now that I have it I am in love with it period. I can now wear simple gold earrings while wearing only T-shirts with this watch!
I stopped working late December 2014 to stay home and take care of my kids. On my spare time I surf social media or window shop at eBay or olx. By looking, I fell in love with another watch- the BA 112-1A. (Silly I know!)
The price of the BA 112-1A is steep. As of March this year as a new model (late 2014 release, I think) this sells at P5500 - P6000. Mall price is P6995. I just couldn't afford it. I had to make a decision to let go of the watches I wouldn't be using - that means selling my 2 oldest Baby- Gs.
It makes sense that I sell my watches at a cheap price - that way I could buy the BA 112-1A.
I am thinking being practical - I have never really worn these watches that much anymore since I am mostly at home and rarely go out - I am talking about BLX-103-1ER and BG-1005A-2DR, my Swap watches and Casio Poptone watches .
I thought about not letting these watches rot in my drawer and be useless. I thought about the other people who, like me before can't afford authentic Baby-Gs, that they will be delighted to get a good quality product. My BLX-103-1ER was sold for P2000 to a mother who wanted to surprise her daughter who asked for a Baby-G watch as a birthday gift. She can't afford a brand new one and even haggled from my asking price of P2500 to P2000. I agreed for the price knowing I would make a little girl happy. After receiving the watch she texted me and thanked me so profusely because the watch was smooth and like brand new. Meanwhile, my BG-1005A-2DR was sold to a father who was also looking for a watch for his child - he wanted a good quality watch that in the end I considered his offer of P1600 even though my asking price was actually P2000.
So all my old watches sold - I raised enough funds for my BA 112 1A and got it March this year for a bargain price of P5200 - while other sellers priced it at P5999 and at Time Depot P6995. I got it from an online reputable seller C&S online shoppe. I was also very happy with their service - they ship fast, the watch and its box, manuals and tin can are all fresh - really brand new! They have also already adjusted the time of the watch so its ready to wear - I guess they also wanted to make sure the watch is working before they send it - and I appreciate that very much! This is my first photo of this beauty:
Forgive my selfie - I mean my watch selfie. Here's me rocking the BA 112-1a:
Crazy I know, but a month after, I bought another watch as a gift for myself. My last money watch as I recall LOL. I bought it on impulse because it was on sale for P3999 at Greatvalueplus.ph and the bonus is they offer COD. I paid for it plus shipping for only P4,054. I really wanted a red one that would stand out.
I was supposed to buy a white watch - but the white version of this is nowhere available online.
I also saw my brother's mother-in-law wearing a white version of this - so I figured the red version would be perfect for me.
More pictures of my watches together:
As of the moment I am thinking of coming up with a twin collection - 2 of the same model in different colors. But since I am out of work, I'd rely on my husband - if he's giving me a new one as a gift. (again and again LOL) One time he asked me, "What are you gonna do with all those watches?" I countered, "I will keep them and use them, its my collection! If you're into shoes and clothes, I am into watches!" That simple!
I will continue to update this blog for any addition to my watches or Baby-G collection.
I don't know if my tastes will change as I age, maybe it will and I might stop buying Baby-Gs.
Maybe I won't because their designs are fun, feminine and just awesome. Wearing one makes me feel young. How about you, what's your favorite Baby-G watch? You can share about it, I'll be happy to hear from you!
UPDATE (June 9, 2016)
A few weeks ago I made a discovery, Thailand OEM watches! I was rather dismayed. Why?
They have created a perfect replica of my BA 112-1A! You can get a perfect replica of these watches for as low as P1,500. So I was thinking, what the hell happened Casio?
Here are the other models that they have replicated so far:
I was amazed when I saw the ads for these watches. They just look exactly like the original! Someone told me you can buy these at Divisoria for P1,000 a piece, but online sellers are selling it at P1,300- 2,500. So if you wanted to buy the original ones be careful if you will buy the same models on the picture.
I was tempted to buy one. I really really thought about it and even contacted 3 online sellers. Why? They claim that the parts used in these watches are the same as the original ones but assembled by a different company. Same materials, the watches are water resistant, and the screws won't rust. They said it doesn't have autolight, but as far as I know Baby G's don't have that. So I was really really tempted! But my birthday came and my husband came to my rescue! Here's his gift, my first for the year, first white Baby G watch:
I have to admit that I have been thinking about this watch ever since it came out - the first time I saw it.
I was really planning on buying a white Baby G for myself and was supposed to buy BA 110 7A1:
I was holding on buying this one because of its price. But then the BA 120LP 7A2 came out and I forgot about this. I was thinking that due to its Leopard print, even if the watch gets dirty in the long run, it would still look okay and classy for everyday wear.
So I forgot about the Baby G replicas. I was in fact thinking of getting the black and gold model so I can compare it with the original and blog about it. But luckily, I came by this store at Robinson's (tiangge stall) who sells Baby G replicas and they allowed me to touch and inspect them!
I personally saw the replica of my watch, BA 112-1a and BA 112-7a (the white one).
Here's what I have observed, and a checklist if you want to find out what you have is an OEM replica:
1. The BA 112-7a's material is glossy white. The original is quite matte. The plastic looks cheap, but because its white it still looks presentable and at first glance you would think its original, but a closer look will reveal it is fake - the glossy band and watch material, the Baby G logo on top of the watch is not perfectly engraved - its rather shallow and the blue paint used on it is quite glossy. The dial's digitals are hard to see, the LCD is pink like the original but its hard to see the day - you'll have to look very closely.
2. Observing BA 112-1a - now I was telling the shop owners I have the original and it looks EXACTLY the same - they were quite proud and said you don't have to buy the expensive ones now. But I don't think so.
Why? Here's what I have observed: (this applies to all OEM Baby G Thailand replica)
The backlight - it is more of a yellow color. The light is stronger than the original, and you can see the little square light at the bottom when you light up the watch. You cannot see the bulb on the original one - just the light which is more of an orange color.
No HOURLY TIME SIGNAL - okay so this is a favorite feature of mine on Baby G watches. You hear two beeps signaling a new hour, a cute little reminder that wasn't copied by the replicas.
The Button D has no function - On authentic Baby G's when you press this (bottom right button) the display on the LCD changes - if you want to see the day and date together and the digital time; and if you press it again you will see the day, example MON for Monday, and the date and month at the bottom. In the replica version this button has no function at all.
The round digital seconds - the digital seconds indicator - the round thing that looks like a pizza that shades continuously indicating seconds - it works on the original that it shades clockwise and that doesn't change course- on the fake one it shades up randomly so in short - its quite confusing to look at.
The bottom line? Save your money and buy the original for 100% satisfaction. But I understand that due to budget constraints people would still buy knock offs to look fashionable. I understand that - I've been there once - but I am never going back because I have the money and because its different when you have the real thing especially because of its quality.
Next thing to buy - a pink Baby G! Will update soon!
:-)
Growing up, I realized my fondness for watches.

WOTD - my UCB shirt has a red heart design in the center so this watch is just perfect! |

I love all of them! |
Photo of a BA 112-1A replica, you'll think its the real thing. This is not my photo (came from google) credits to the owner. |
Here are the other models that they have replicated so far:
These are not my photos. Credit goes to the owner. |

:-)
